About the Superstars!

Tell us a little about yourself? Where did you grow up and how did you get into horses?

I grew up in Fair Haven, Vermont. I got into horses and barrel racing through my mother Nicole Helm. I began riding horses and taking lesson from Debbie O’rouke at Pond Hill Stables in Castleton, Vermont. I started barrel racing when I was 11 years old, I would compete in small jackpots and gymkhanas. From there, my love for the sport got bigger. I started to rodeo with my mom every summer in the north east, and eventually I was ready to buy my APRA Rookie Card. Every year, we would find a new horse for me to learn from so I could become a better jockey.

 

What is your Mouse’s personality like? Any quirks? What is something people may not know about her?

Mouse is a 16.3 hands tall Bay mare. She is very bold and not the friendliest to humans. She will pin her ears and try to take a bite out of you. Even though many people are afraid of Mouse, she has always been my favorite.

Did you breed and raise this her yourself? If not, what attracted you to Mouse to purchase?

Mouse is my Mothers horse. Since she was a two year old, we bought and sold her three times. She was hard to figure out. My mom sold her to a friend of ours; Naomi. We bought her back a few years ago as a back up horse.

Tell us anything special about your arena record run – was there anything you done different that day?

Before my run, I have a special routine. In my program, I believe having a consistent routine you follow every time, is the most important. I like to keep everything the same; staying positive, eliminating any distractions, and making sure I have my lucky socks.

 

Do you have a favorite setup?

Mouse works best in small trap pens.

 

Tell us something funny about a run you made, we never see the bloopers behind the scenes?

A couple of years ago, when I was first starting to run Moms horses, we were at a show in Maine. I was running Mouse, as we turned into our second barrel, I fell off. I was given the best dismount award.

 

What is your horses exercise routine like?

My horses get ridden 4 or more times a week. I ride them in field’s majority of the time to keep their minds fresh and happy.

 

What is your feeding program like, do you use any special supplements?

Mouse and Eddie both get feed Ultium grain and soaked beet pulp pellets. Zack has really bad allergies so he is on a forage only diet. He gets feed Alfalfa pellets, Timothy pellets, and soaked beet pulp pellets. All the horses have the same supplement program; EPM Super De Wormer, Emcelle, and Vermont Blend.

 

What is a bit that will always be hanging in your tack room?

An Elliot

 

Does your horse run in shoes are barefoot?

Shoes

 

Any big Future Plans?

My goal is to eventually qualify for the International Finals Rodeo.

 

If you could make a run on any horse out there, who would it be?

There are many high level barrel horse out there. If I had to choose a horse to run, I would pick KF Epic Ta Fame “Epic” owned by Julie Plourde.

 

What could be done to better the sport of barrel racing any special advice you would like to give?

Having a routine and good mindset into every run has been very beneficial for my program. Surrounding yourself in a positive environment and having an inner-circle of people who support you and your horses, is what has helped me through my rodeo journey. Always having a good attitude.
