About the Super Stars!

Tell us a little about yourself? Where did you grow up and how did you get into horses?

I grew up in Northern Vermont with my older sister, and family, who got me into horses at a very young age. They started out with lead- line gymkhanas then eventually when I got faster they introduced me to strictly barrel racing on my fast little pony I had at the time.

What is your her personality like? Any quirks? What is something people may not know about your Jaycee?

My mare I race now is very quirky, she had a late start due to no fault of her own. I started her myself in 2021 when she was 6 years old. She was always a very nervy horse about everything when I started her and she still to this day can be pretty nervy with small things, but she find her confidence once you get on her.

Did you breed and raise this horse yourself? If not, what attracted you to this horse to purchase?

We bred and raised Jaycee at home, she was the one foal at our ranch I got to watch be foaled out and we were all super excited she was a buckskin! At a very young age we knew this mare had everything to be a stellar barrel horse, her movements seemed effortless even when she was very young. She was also born the same year our mentor in Canada, who taught us a lot about barrel racing at a high level, passed away.  His name was JC (Jean- Claude) Daudelin and that is how our filly got the name Jaycees Secret.

Tell us anything special about your arena record run – was there anything you done different that day?

The day I ran the arena record I actually had a slot race the next day so in my head I wanted to lay down a solid fast run to get my confidence up for the following day, I didn’t expect it to be that fast when I crossed the line though!  The following day she had another great run to place me 4th in the slot race but it wasn’t quite as perfect as the record run!

Do she have a favorite setup?

On that horse my favorite setup is a simple full cheek smooth snaffle, she is such a light and sensitive horse that she performs best with little to no bit pressure just lateral pulls. I choose the full cheek as sometimes she opens her mouth on the backside of the barrel and I hate to ever see a snaffle accidentally pull too far into the mouth, so the full cheek prevents that from happening.

Tell us something funny about a run you made, we never see the bloopers behind the scenes?

At one of my races this year she was feeling a bit cold backed one morning but I hopped on anyways disregarding it because that’s not untypical for her at times. I quickly found out I probably should have lunged her prior as she decided to rear straight up as my hind cinch was a bit too snug for her liking. I jumped off as she was straight in the air, landed on my feet, loosened the hind cinch, trotted her in hand a few times to make sure she was all done, and jumped back on and finished first in the 1D that day in the race.

What is your horses exercise routine like?

I try to ride at least 3- 4 times a week, I like to include hill work as I live in Vermont and have many hills we can walk up to build muscle!  If I am in the thick of my season I try to give them the day before the show off then two days after the show off.

What is your feeding program like, do you use any special supplements?

I have my running horses on Purina Ultrium Gastric Care grain, along with Purina SuperSport amino acids. For supplements I like to feed MVP’s Vitamin- E 5,000, I do 2 scoops a day for 10,000 IUs of vitamin- E during their running season.

What is a bit that will always be hanging in your tack room?

I am a big fan of snaffle bits of all different arrangements. Some horses like different mouth pieces but I own mostly snaffles, I also have a few junior cow bits I use on certain horses who prefer those.

Does your horse run in shoes are barefoot?

My horse runs in 4 shoes, front shoes are side winders and hind shoes are regular steel shoes.

Any big Future Plans?

I am in the works of planning an embryo transfer from Jaycee into a recip mare hopefully for spring of 2027!

If you could make a run on any horse out there, who would it be?

I would want to ride Kassie Mowry’s horse Jarvis, I have always been a huge Kassie Mowry fan and I absolutely love Jarvis’s style and grit.

What could be done to better the sport of barrel racing any special advice you would like to give?

I think something that could be done in the barrel racing world is to stay humble after victories. Always help the next person coming up and celebrate your friend’s victories just as much as your own!
